Synthetic Form Review

07/13/2005 7:10 AM, AMG

Gridlock's first album release is a darkly dynamic soundscape. Heavily distorted percussion, sometimes bordering on noise, imprints itself over atmospheric washes and ethereal vocals. Driving basslines keep the sound urgent, but this is not a danceable album. Like Mentallo & the Fixer, Gridlock uses verses and choruses only when finding them suitable, allowing each track to arrive at its own conclusion. At times, the darkness and the melodies' flowing nature are reminiscent of Coil -- with teeth. The construction of these technoid soundscapes will become a feature of Gridlock's compositions, even when experimenting with IDM sounds on later releases. The Synthetic Form will demand attention from listeners looking for a different approach to the industrial sound. ~ Theo Kavadias, All Music Guide
