The members of Destiny's Child will truly become "Independent Women" after their current concert tour. The trio issued a statement on Monday (June 13) announcing its decision to disband once the Destiny Fulfilled...And Loving It tour wraps later this year. The statement read, "We have been working together as Destiny's Child since we were 9, and touring together since we were 14. After a lot of discussion and some deep soul-searching, we realized that our current tour has given us the opportunity to leave Destiny's Child on a high note, united in our friendship and filled with an overwhelming gratitude for our music, our fans, and each other."
The statement added, "After all these wonderful years working together, we realized that now is the time to pursue our personal goals and solo efforts in earnest. No matter what happens, we will always love each other as friends and sisters and will always support each other as artists. We want to thank all of our fans for their incredible love and support and hope to see you all again as we continue fulfilling our destinies."
Formed in Houston, Destiny's Child debuted in 1997. Beyonce Knowles and Kelly Rowland have been with the group since the beginning. Michelle Williams joined in 2000.
The group members have launched solo music and acting projects in recent years, with Knowles having the greatest success both on record and in films.
The group's latest album, Destiny Fulfilled, debuted at Number One on the Billboard Top 200 chart in December and has sold more than 2.7 million copies in the U.S., according to Nielsen SoundScan.
Destiny's Child kicks off the North American leg of the Destiny Fulfilled...And Loving It tour on July 2nd at the Essence Music Festival in New Orleans.
